People often ask us whether they need an accountant to complete their annual income tax return.  The short answer is no, there is no legal requirement to use an accountant to do this.

The smart answer however is yes.  Although Revenue will often let you know if you have underpaid tax, they are unlikely to come knocking on your door if you have overpaid.  The onus really is on the taxpayer to ensure that they are filing their tax return correctly.
